Addressing the Malicious Campaign: Minister’s Assertion
In Islamabad, Caretaker Minister for Information, Broadcasting, and Parliamentary Affairs, Murtaza Solangi, emphasized during a press conference alongside officials from the FIA, PTA, and other relevant institutions that the ongoing investigation by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) into what he termed as a “malicious campaign” against the top judiciary on social media was being conducted in strict adherence to the law.
JIT Investigation: Unveiling the Anti-Judiciary Campaign
Solangi disclosed that the JIT established on January 16 specifically to delve into the anti-judiciary campaign proliferating on various social media platforms had convened its initial meeting on January 17, followed by a second meeting on January 23, with the investigative process still underway.
Progress Update: Scrutiny and Inquiries
Providing an update on the progress, Solangi mentioned that they had scrutinized 600 social media accounts thus far, resulting in initiating approximately 100 inquiries. They dispatched notices to 110 individuals, comprising 32 journalists and 22 political activists, in compliance with legal protocols, he stated, refuting allegations of harassment directed at journalists involved in the probe.
Ensuring Legal Adherence: Pursuing Culprits
The minister underscored the importance of uncovering the truth in this matter, highlighting that they had not filed any First Investigation Report (FIR) nor made any arrests thus far. He assured that they would pursue legal actions against those found culpable of orchestrating the campaign against the judiciary.
Legal Boundaries: Prohibitions and Distinctions
Responding to inquiries, Solangi reiterated that the law unequivocally prohibits campaigns targeting the judiciary and armed forces, stressing the distinction between criticism and character assassination. He emphasized that recent social media activities directed at apex court judges crossed the line from legitimate criticism to outright ridicule.
Government’s Role and Parliament’s Jurisdiction
Regarding the caretaker government’s role, Solangi clarified that while it could take necessary measures within its mandate, legislative actions fell under the jurisdiction of the Parliament, which was presently non-existent in its lower house.
Dispelling Witch-Hunt Concerns: JIT Operations
Dispelling concerns of a witch-hunt, Solangi affirmed that they had not apprehended any individuals since the formation of the JIT. He noted a significant decline in the intensity of the malicious campaign following the JIT’s establishment.
Notice Issuance: Providing Opportunity for Response
Director-General FIA, Ahmad Ishaque Jahangir, explained that they issued the notices to afford the identified individuals an opportunity to present their perspective on the matter.
